  due to the mispronounciation of names, the last name Jean was intepreted as Jones, the real history is the Jones family were originally Jean Louis, over time Rosemond and other faily dropped the Louis and simply went by Jean then later Jones. I understand this seem bizaar, however in the 1800s after emancipation, families took either the first name or the last name of the slave owner. Jean Louis, was a popular French first name. the same occurred in the Calais family. some of Jean Baptiste Calais slaves took the first name Jean Baptiste as the last name, over time many dropped the Jean and simply go by the last name Baptiste today
